Hong Kong's Disappearing Neon — and the Photographers Racing to Keep It
For half a century, Hong Kong's neon was a second skyline. Pawn shops, mahjong parlours, seafood restaurants — their hand-bent glass signs stacked over the streets so densely that the night glowed pink and green from Mong Kok to Wan Chai. It was the light that a thousand films borrowed and no other city ever matched.
And it is going. Sign by sign — removed under building regulations, lost when old shops close, retired as the neon masters who bend the glass grow old without apprentices. The neon that remains is a fraction of what burned twenty years ago. Cultural organisations now archive salvaged signs; museums collect them. What was once just "the street" has become heritage.
